Barrel saunas use a wood-burning or electric heater to heat the interior from 160°F to 195°F. Most models require minimal setup — position, connect or load fuel, and heat.
Digital thermostat panel sets target temperature and timer. Most residential units reach 180°F in 30–45 minutes. Set and forget — the controller maintains temperature automatically.
Add 2–3 small hardwood splits to the firebox. Start temperature rises rapidly for 15–20 minutes then stabilizes. Add wood as needed to maintain target temp. Use dry, seasoned wood only.
Add 1–2 ladles of water directly onto the hot stones. The steam burst (löyly) raises perceived heat significantly. Use water only on the stones — never pour directly on the heater body.
Adjustable floor and ceiling vents control air circulation. Open vents fully for initial heat-up, then adjust to taste. Ceiling vent closed = hotter and more humid. Floor vent controls fresh air intake.
Barrel saunas outsell cabin saunas 3:1 at this price point because they heat faster and look better in a backyard. The thermowood treatment on the Nordic is the same process used by Finnish manufacturers — no creosote smell, no warping. The Harvia heater is the industry standard. Competitors offering ‘custom’ heaters at this price are cutting corners.
